Within the last year the Comox Valley has given birth to three new micro breweries – Cumberland Brewing Company, Gladstone Brewing and Forbidden Brewing Co. (which we hope to visit soon). The Blind Taste Tester has reviewed the Cumberland Brewery and we are pleased today to review Courtenay’s Gladstone Brewery.

Gladstone-iconGladstone_tapsWe chose the patio, which has a great selection of plebeian tables and chairs. Our table was made from an old electrical cable spool. We chose two different beers, Pilsner and Saison – the Saison being Gladstone’s new light-bodied ale. The previous week we stopped by and tried their award winning Porter, a dark and refreshing brew. Both Jim and I enjoyed the beers to the last drop.  They complimented the pizza.

If you are looking for lunch and/or dinner walk into the adjacent Guerrilla Pizzeria, place your order from their six standards; or go for the ever-changing daily specials. Jim chose one of their specials “The Brassica” – a vegetarian pizza made of broccoli, olive oil, garlic, chili, pecorino, fior, and other great crunchy stuff. On each table you will find a menu with a glossary of terms to satisfy your culinary curiosity. Within fifteen minutes our bubbly waitress delivered our steaming hot pizza. Initially I was hesitant, because in my world real men don’t eat broccoli.  The pizza was an explosion of interesting flavours and spices and I ate my broccoli like a good boy.

Gladstone’s location is smack dab in the middle of everything.  Across the street is the Courtenay Museum and bus terminal and just around the corner is the Sid Williams Theatre and the Native Sons Hall; plus you can take a walk up Fifth Street and explore all the great stores.

As we sat enjoying the pleasant afternoon with our beer and pizza I commented to Jim what a breath of fresh air it is to have young people on the Courtenay Council. Project Watershed is moving forward with its plans for the old Field Sawmill site and two Courtenay Councillors are assigned to work with us on this exciting community-changing project.

If you’re pizza and beer loving people like Jim and I, you will be well advised to try Guerrilla Pizzeria and Gladstone Brewery. The Blind Taste Taster rates it a 4.1 out of 5.
